There are many diets that people try when wanting to shed those extra pounds fast. One of those diets is the low-carb or ‘no carb’ diet. However, many people are finding that eliminating carbohydrates is increasing the occurrence of bad breath.
Here’s How low Carb Diets contribute to Bad Breath
Limiting the amount of carbohydrates ingested allows the body to burn fat for fuel. When this process takes place, chemicals known as ‘ketones’ are released in the breath and urine. In addition to ketones, the types of foods ingested in a low carbohydrate diet will add to the distinct, unpleasant difference in the freshness of your breath causing halitosis.
The breakdown of food particles is what affects the breath. When eating high protein, more sulfur compounds are produced, diminishing saliva production, especially overnight while you sleep.
Saliva is very important in maintaing a healthy mouth and fighting bacteria that causes damaging plaque and tartar.
Keeping Breath Fresh during a Low Carb Diet
One of the best ways to avoid bacteria that causes bad breath is to floss after each meal. Flossing will loosen food particles caught in between teeth helping to avoid food buildup causing plaque and bad breath.
Drinking plenty of water will take the place of natural saliva and help wash food particles and harmful bacteria away, keeping your mouth fresh.
Keep a toothbrush handy and, after meals, floss and wait about 30 minutes before brushing. Then brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with a good mouthwash to insure the elimination of food particles and bacteria.
While you are dieting, you may be losing nutrients that keep your teeth healthy. During this time, it is suggested that you keep a close watch on your oral health by visiting Ocean County dentist, Dr.Ron Rotem.
Dr. Rotem has been keeping Ocean County smiles healthy and beautiful for two decades. Keep your oral health in optimum condition and avoid the bad breath caused by low carb diets.
